Tips and Tricks

(1) Gslapt dead servers

Sometimes the official source server for Gslapt update is dead or slow. There are also trusted mirrors containing the same packages you can use, so to extend your source servers list, edit /etc/slapt-get/slapt-getrc and add the following lines:

SOURCE=ftp://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/vectorlinux/veclinux-5.0/packages
SOURCE=http://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/vectorlinux/veclinux-5.0/packages
SOURCE=http://vectorlinux.osuosl.org/veclinux-5.0/packages

(2) Workstation Tuning

If you run VectorLinux only as a workstation you can safely shutdown certain servers:

  • SSH daemon (unless you really require incoming SSH connections)
  • CUPS daemon (unless you use your machine for printing)
  • SAMBA daemon (unless you need conectivity with other Microsoft Windows machines)
  • (3) Internet Explorer on Linux

    Running Linux sometimes can cause some issues if you need to browse IE-only websites, or if you are a web designer or developer and you need to test your output on all popular browsers. Since IE is still the most popular browser it is a good idea to run it via Wine.

    Setting up manually can be a hard task, and there is already a script that can do this for you.

    Wine is a very good tool and works fine in the VectorLinux environment. It can pe easily installed via Gslapt, and their official packages are handy for running a large range of Windows applications. Adobe Photoshop is a good example.
